What is a Galgol Español?

The Galgo Español is a member of the sighthound family, which also includes Greyhounds, Borzois, Whippets and Salukis.  Although they are similar in appearance, the Galgo Español, often referred to as the “Spanish Greyhound,” is not of the same lineage. They are both sighthounds, but Galgos are normally smaller with a thinner, less muscular build than Greyhounds. Galgos are higher in the rear than in the front and have flatter musculature than a Greyhound – characteristic of endurance runners. They also tend to be smaller, with a lighter build, have longer tails and have a very long, streamlined head that gives the impression of larger ears.

CHARACTERISTICS – Galgos are low to medium energy. They are gentle, calm and quiet, but also energetic, fun-loving, affectionate and intelligent. They are very agile and can be great jumpers.

COAT – Galgos are usually smooth coated though occasionally rough-coated and require little grooming. They come in a wide variety of colours and can be one solid colour, two colours or various shades of brindle.

SIZE – Galgos range from 23” to 26” in height at the shoulder and weigh between 50lbs and 65lbs.

LIFESPAN – typically 12-15 years.

When owned by hunters in rural Spain, Galgos are used for hare hunting and coursing & betting. Unfortunately, these working dogs are not protected under Spanish law.  The Galgo is overbred, overworked and often inhumanely treated.  When no longer of value to a hunter or no longer needed, the Galgo is considered disposable.  Every year, tens of thousands of dogs are either abandoned or killed.  Spanish Rescue organizations exist to save abandoned Galgos living on the streets and to save dogs from perreras (kill stations).
